Netgear Nighthawk Setup Guide
Got a new Nighthawk? This walks you from the sealed box to a working, password-protected network — with the steps the quick-start card glosses over.
What's in the box
- The Nighthawk router
- Power adapter
- One Ethernet cable
- Quick-start card with the default WiFi label
- Detachable antennas (on the bigger models)
Note the sticker on the underside — it carries the default network name, password and the admin login. Snap a photo before the router faces the wall.
Step by step
Place it and attach the antennas
Central, high, and out in the open beats a closet every time. Screw on any detachable antennas and stand them upright.
Connect to your modem
Run the Ethernet cable from your modem (or the ISP gateway) into the Nighthawk's yellow Internet port. Power the modem first, give it a minute, then power the router.
ISP gateway already a router? Put it in bridge / modem-only mode to avoid a "double NAT".
Join the default WiFi
On your phone, connect to the network printed on the sticker. The Nighthawk app then finds the router automatically.
Password → see sticker
Status → connected
Run the guided setup
The app (or routerlogin.net in a browser) walks you through a firmware update and the basics. Let the firmware update finish — don't pull power mid-flash.
Set your network name and password
Rename the network to something you'll recognise and pick a strong WPA3 (or WPA2) passphrase. Change the admin password too — it's separate from the WiFi one, and people forget it.
Security → WPA3-Personal
Admin pass → ••••••••
Reconnect your devices
Your gear was on the old network name, so rejoin everything to the new one. Done — run a speed test to confirm you're getting what you pay for.
Common setup mistakes
01Leaving the ISP box in router mode
Two routers fighting creates a "double NAT" that breaks gaming and some apps. Set the ISP unit to bridge mode, or ask your provider to.
02Hiding the router in a cabinet
Metal and dense wood gut your signal. Out in the open, off the floor, away from the microwave.
03Skipping the firmware update
Out-of-the-box firmware is often months old. The first update usually fixes the exact bugs early reviews complain about.
04Reusing the default admin password
The admin login controls everything. Change it, and store it where you'll actually find it again.
If the internet light won't go solid, our troubleshooting guide covers the "no connection" fix first. Setting up a mesh instead? See the Orbi setup guide.
